Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) play a central role in the development of innovative and customized optronic systems. Their high flexibility, parallel processing capabilities, and real-time performance make them ideal for applications that require fast signal processing and precise control — such as in image processing, sensor technology, or camera systems.

In FPGA design, the functionality of the circuit is defined using hardware description languages (HDLs) such as VHDL or Verilog. This approach allows complex algorithms to be implemented directly in hardware, resulting in significantly higher processing speeds than with conventional software on microcontrollers. At the same time, the reprogrammability of FPGAs enables rapid adaptation to changing requirements or new standards.

A particular advantage for optronic systems is the ability of FPGAs to process multiple data streams in parallel. This is crucial, for example, when merging sensor data from cameras and optical detectors. In addition, they can be used for real-time image processing, optical signal processing, and precise clock control without the latency of conventional processors.
